Antique English Spongeware Pitcher No. 2

A striking antique English spongeware pitcher dating to the late 19th century. Generously scaled, the pitcher has a graceful flared rim, curved handle, and distinctive banded decoration encircling the lower body. Hand-applied blue sponge decoration covers the warm cream ground, creating the irregular pattern and subtle variations that make each piece of spongeware unique.

Spongeware became popular in Britain during the 19th century as a method of decorating everyday pottery using color applied with a cut or natural sponge. The process produced spontaneous patterns that varied from piece to piece. Originally made as practical household wares, antique spongeware is now collected for its distinctive decoration, utilitarian history, and the individuality of its hand-applied surface.

At nearly twelve inches high, this is an especially substantial example with wonderful decorative presence. Beautiful displayed on its own, filled with flowers or branches, or collected alongside other antique stoneware.
