Antique English Spongeware Pitcher No. 3

A charming antique English spongeware pitcher dating to the late 19th century. The simple utilitarian form is decorated throughout with richly applied blue spongework over a warm cream ground, with a gently flared rim and substantial curved handle.

Spongeware became popular in Britain during the 19th century as a method of decorating everyday pottery by applying color with a cut or natural sponge. The process created spontaneous, individual patterns that varied from piece to piece. 

The dense blue decoration gives this example particularly strong visual presence. Beautiful displayed alone, used for flowers, or grouped with other antique stoneware.
