What is a Monteith bowl? 

Monteith bowls originated in 17th-century England as an elegant solution for chilling glassware before the age of refrigeration. The basin would be filled with cold water and the stems of wine or punch glasses were hooked over the distinctive notched rim, allowing the bowls of the glasses to rest in the water and stay cool. This design not only kept drinks perfectly chilled but also prevented glasses from rolling and knocking together.
